What is leadership?
Leadership is a skill. Skills are acquired through hard work and experience; skills are learned and can be taught. Leadership relies on those who choose to be led. All of this being said, a more important question will be answered.
What is a leader?
A leader is an individual brave enough to take the responsibility of working with others to achieve a goal. The more leadership a leader has under his/her belt, the more credibility the leader has, which leads to more people willing to be led.
Some ask whether leaders are born, rather than raised. The reality is that both can happen. Some people are natural leaders just like some people are naturally creative. Since leadership is a skill, even natural leaders have to learn the tools of the trade and need to hone their skills.
Anything else?
The formula for success, S=MC2 applies similarly here. A leader is nothing without internal motivation to be the leader. A motivated leader is nothing without someone to lead. A leader with a team is nothing without motivation. Everything else is a result of motivation, cooperation, or both. The best leader can use most of the tools of trade to be successful.
What are the tools of the trade?
The tools of the trade consist of human characteristics and commonly used skills we learn from daily affairs. These are:
• Motivation
• Cooperation
• Patience
• Time Management
• Public Speaking
• Charisma
• Communication skills
• Attitude
• Self Confidence
• Delegation
• Goals
• Stress Management
• Networking
Leadership is an extensive and elaborate topic that I will attempt to break down and simplify to the very last detail. Each tab will discuss in detail each tool of the trade of leadership. The last tab will contain a few quizzes I've come across in my research that may help you determine what kind of leader you are and what you're strongest qualities are and what you should work on. Each tab won't necessarily be long and you may notice that each tab is related to one another.
What if I feel I am already a leader?

What is motivation?
Elitist Eastern Seaboard Dictionary Editors define the word as "the general desire or willingness of someone to do something". I have no qualms with this definition, I used the introduction to the definition because I was motivated to. Those who get the elitist joke, kudos.
In all seriousness, motivation goes much deeper than the definition stated above. Motivation is a sum of your internal willingness to achieve a goal, your internal want to please those who are watching you, and the external stimuli that have shaped your comfort zone.
What's the difference between the official definition and yours?
The official definition doesn't describe what the general desires are. I did, namely, two internal stimuli, and one collective external stimulus.
The importance?
This tab is here to explain just that. Let's go over each stimulus individually:
1. Internal willingness to achieve a goal. This is important considering that you can't do something you don't want to. Simply having a want to achieve something is the backbone of this stimulus, and is the image the dictionary editors are pushing for motivation.
2. Internal want to please those who are watching you. This is also called Peer pressure. Believe it or not, knowing that you are being watched may raise or reduce your motivation to do something. For instance, knowing that a room in your is forbidden for you to enter, you won't enter if your mom or dad is standing near it. On the other hand, it is socially acceptable to recognize special occasions with your significant other. Especially when dating, it is important not to forget these occasions, lest you fall into some trouble. A situation like this raises motivation for you to please your significant other and remember the occasions.
3. Externally shaped comfort zone. In simpler words how your life has made you unique. Living in a controlled environment reduces motivation because you will want to act in ways that only please the person/institution in charge. Other types of environments change your motivation in different ways.
How does motivation pertain to leadership?
Together with attitude, motivation is the gateway to success. Your most important goals that you want to accomplish the most you are most motivated for. For example, I'm pushing for Souper Bowl of Caring to be a nation wide project. I love the project and am motivated to show other schools that it is easy and fun to do.
Your will is a sum of your motivation and your attitude. It starts with being motivated for your goals. It ends with you standing your ground and pushing to achieve your goal. Most people see motivated people as people who will succeed some way or another. As such, most people like to follow someone who is motivated. That's why motivational speakers are so successful, they themselves are motivated to get you motivated. Their efforts are leading you to be a more motivated person in general.
The best leaders know how to motivate others.

What is cooperation?
Simply put, cooperation is the process of individuals working together to achieve a goal. Everything from helping someone carry a heavy box to working in a corporate team in charge of managing sales in Florida. Cells in our body cooperate to keep us alive.
How does cooperation relate to leadership?
You can't lead without a team to lead. Even in a two person group, one leads and the other follows, otherwise a clash of ideas occurs. Leaders need to know techniques for getting people to work together. For more on what needs to be done to get people to cooperate, visit the success page.
Cooperation most directly affects committees. A leader needs to know how to make his/her committee efficient and excited to accomplish their goal.
What is the best way to get committees to work?
As mentioned in the success page, the best way to get your committee to work together is to get your committee to know each other. Ice breakers and group activities are great ways to get your committee to work together and see what their own strengths and weaknesses are. This way, your committee members will know what jobs they are more apt for and will take those jobs to help the committee progress.

What is patience?
Patience is the ability to be tolerant of others. The more patient you are, the more you can tolerate change and the more apt you are to be a better leader.
How does patience relate to leadership?
Being calm and collected in stressful situations is a very important quality for successful leaders. Patient leaders can handle any situation effectively because even though something critical may have changed, the leader can still think clearly and come up with a solution.
Also, when running meetings, it is good for the leader to be patient to an extent because there will always be the person or group in a meeting that doesn't listen. Instead of scolding them, calmly asking them to pay attention to the meeting works much better.
How does one become more patient?
There are many methods by which one can become more patient. The first step to being more patient is to look at each situation by taking a step backwards and seeing all sides of the situation. Instead of acting brashly and suffering the consequences of a hasty decision, taking a moment to think makes a world of difference. Another method is to count to ten before acting. In general, being angry and just acting on gut instinct usually results in major negative consequences. Counting to ten usually helps reduce the chances of making bad decisions.
The reality?
Patience is a virtue, tolerance is a skill. Learn to tolerate and you will find patience very easy to practice. Of course, there are situations where the gut-level instinct is the best way to go simply based on the type of decision it is. Decide efficiently and effectively. The best leader knows when to use quick or thought out decisions. As for the patience, it's better to be patient than to lash out every chance you get.

What is it?
Time management is the process of being responsible with your duties. It relies on you knowing yourself and your habits well enough to beat your own procrastination.
How do I beat my procrastination?
To-Do lists or portable calendars with everything you need to do for each day is extremely useful. Both needs to be accessible to you and both must be filled in regularly. Knowing you have something to do is a great motivator for finishing your duties. Even if there’s something you need to do that relies on someone else’s work, follow up with that person to get it all done.
How does this relate to leadership?
As a committee chair, I know personally that if I’m not managing my time wisely, the whole project can fall through the cracks. There is no substitute for getting work done. I keep my to-do lists in a small notepad that I carry around with me all the time. This way I never forget what I need to do and can add notes if necessary. The best leaders know that they need to ensure they are not wasting any time in regards to their duties.
What if I still can’t beat my procrastination?
The best way to beat your procrastination is to be motivated to. IF you really want to change and be more responsible with your time, you should be able to make that change after some time. Try to develop a habit of writing down what you need to do. Then make a habit to do some of them. Habits are easy to make and hard to break, so you have to break your habit of procrastinating and make a habit of doing your work.

What is public speaking?
The name speaks for itself. Public speaking is a skill, just like leadership. Public speaking relies on your ability to speak to others and can be improved through practice.
How does public speaking relate to leadership?
All leaders, at some point, need to present to others an idea. For example, I stood at KEY Club’s District Convention for a few hours to tell anyone who would listen about Souper Bowl of Caring and what I’m doing about it (the competition and awards and all). Club presidents have to speak to the club in meetings or to the officers in board meetings. Committee chairs have to talk to their committees about what they are going to do in their project.
The point?
The point is that without being able to speak to a group of people, no matter what size, a leader cannot effectively lead.
How do I improve my public speaking?
There are a few ways. Those who have seen me speak know that I had a lot of stage fright. After speaking a few times, I got used to the idea of talking to the group and eventually got good. For those who were like me and have stage fright, you can do a few things:
• Practice your speech before hand. Knowing what you need to say is the key to saying it.
• Make a list of points. Knowing the points in your speech is a good way to not worry about memorizing the whole speech.
• Know about what you’re going to talk about. As in my case for the convention, I know enough about Souper Bowl of Caring to be able to make a speech without any pre-written material. This is also useful when in a question and answer session.
• Look for people you know in the crowd. It helps to know that in a sea of unknown faces, your best friend is there to support you.
• Talk to the crowd, not your microphone or your feet. This is key to public speaking. Always, talk to your audience. Look them in the eye and make sure you address them by moving around to let them know you recognize their presence. Your feet are not your audience, so keep your head up.
• Practice by speaking to yourself. It sounds and feels silly, but in reality the practice is a great way to prepare yourself to speak. Mirrors help you form an image of what the crowd will see when you present.
• Get rid of the Uh’s and Um’s. Few public uh speakers get their point um, across when they uh have uh filler words in their um, speech. See what I mean? Clean speech leads to clear understanding of what you are trying to say.
• Speak, speak, speak. The more you speak in public, the better you will get and the more comfortable you will be. Don’t forget to think about your audience, make yourself heard! Don’t talk too softly or else your whole speech will be done for.
All of these tips will help you be a great public speaker. Remember, the crowd never knows how much experience you have in speaking. The crowd is all ears and ready to listen. Look like you know what you’re doing and the crowd will listen, quake in your boots too much and the crowd will look indifferent.

What is charisma?
Charisma is trait that can only be discovered when listening to someone speak. Someone with charisma has this spark in his/her personality that motivates others to listen or act. Many motivational speakers have charisma.
How does charisma relate to leadership?
Charisma is a trait that is extremely useful when leading others. Charismatic leaders are often seen as heroes, people who can get everyone rallied up to keep going. This trait is very important to leading.
Wait, it’s important, but not key to leadership?
Correct. Charisma is a trait that strongly affects one’s ability to lead, but one does not have to be charismatic to lead. Since I’m covering every aspect of leadership, this topic is a must. I have seen many great leaders who have little to no charisma.
Say I want to be charismatic, what do I do?
Charismatic leaders are passionate about what they do. My advice on this is to simply love what you do and be motivated to keep doing what you do. Charismatic leaders look like they know what they are doing and their goals are clear to those who listen. Make your point clear and act. That should help.

What are communication skills?
The name speaks for itself. These skills are key to everyone, leader or not.
How do communication skills relate to leadership?
These skills are the backbone to leaders. Honestly, not being able to communicate is bad for anyone. Our social order relies on communicating with others to receive information or to get help. Even when not applied to leadership, communication is key to getting anything done.
How do I improve my communication skills?
The easiest way to improve communication is to have a list of everyone you need to contact quickly in your phone or on paper. This is the basics of building a network. When you need something, contact these people to get things done. To improve on your communication skills, make a habit out of calling those people in your committee to catch up and make sure everything is up to speed. When doing a project, doing forget to follow up. Following up is the Achilles Heel to leaders. Call the people back to ensure everything is A-OK.

What is attitude?
Attitude is one’s outlook on life. Attitude affects every aspects of one’s own personality.
How does Attitude relate to leadership?
One's attitude affects everything he/she does. Having a positive outlook on life brings about motivation to be more active and results in good vibes from those around you. People like happy people, so being happy and positive is a great way to get good results from others. Negative and constantly gloomy people are usually left to themselves and can't lead effectively because of their attitude. Attitude is the key to being able to lead others.
Happy people with happy attitudes usually lead better lives. These people are more tolerant of change and they live longer. So, ultimately, your attitude affects everything from your life span to your quality of life to your ability to lead.
What's the best way to make sure people see me as having a positive attitude?
Smile. Try not to be negative. Of course, the idea is to keep a positive outlook. Don't be so overly optimistic that you suffer from it. The best leaders know how to balance optimism with realism while retaining the image of being in control.

What is self confidence?
The name is self explanatory. Self confidence is rooted from your self esteem.
How does self confidence relate to leadership?
Being confident in your own abilities is the first step in being a leader. For example, when speaking in public, if you sound unsure of yourself, your audience will be unsure of you. Reflect to others what you want them to reflect back. Be confident in your ability and others will too (as long as they see results). Similar to how attitude affects everything that happens to you.
How do I boost my self confidence or my self esteem?
Boosting your self esteem is the best way to start building self confidence. To build self esteem, start by having a positive attitude. From there, make a list of what you want to improve on about yourself. Make goals to improve on those aspects and as you complete your goals, you should be building confidence in your ability to set and complete goals.
What happens as a result?
Being confident in yourself leads to being able to take action when the time comes around. The more confident you are the better a leader you will be.

What is delegation?
Delegation is the act of sharing group responsibilities with others.
How does delegation relate to leadership?
Leaders delegate duties all the time. Delegation is how a group of people can achieve their goals. Say a committee wants to sell hershey chocolates in a fundraiser. The duties involved are filling out a project approval form, contacting a fundraiser provider, then getting people to sell the candy. The committee chair would delegate the duty of selling chocolates to the committee members so that the goal can be achieved. In other situations, different members of the committee are assigned different duties, not necessarily the same one.
How do I delegate?
Delegating duties is as simple as knowing what needs to get done. Make a list of everything that has to be done, and ask for volunteers to get different duties done. Then assign the rest of the duties. Assigning the duties is delegation, but don't forget to take on a job yourself.
What's so great about delegating?
From first hand experience I can tell you that a one-man committee is very stressful and unnecessary. Delegating is a great way to make sure no one person has too much on his/her plate. Delegating is a great tool to leaders in every situation. So don't forget to delegate.

What is a goal?
A goal is an objective designed by someone wanting to achieve something.
How do goals relate to leadership?
Goals are great for organizing what needs to get done and for improving time management. Goals are the key to successful leading because with clear goals and motives, a leader looks much more credible than someone who does everything last minute. Having your goals organized also makes things easier when you need to make sure everything that needs to get done is getting done. Just check your goals and your progress on them.
How do I make goals?
The best way to make goals is to start with a To-Do list. Then prioritize your list. Then, you make it a goal to complete everything on your list. You make SMART goals. The SMART stands for:
• Specific
• Measurable
• Active
• Realistic
• Time-Lined
Start with what you want to achieve. Move onto making that goal as specific as possible, being concentrated is better than being too broad. Ask what resources and/or skills do you have that will help you achieve the goal. Then ask yourself what mini goals do you need to set to achieve your goal, it's easier to climb a ladder than to jump 20 feet. Ask yourself when you want your mini goals complete. Then ask when you want your major goal complete. Having all of these answers questioned means you have a SMART goal ready.
Look at your goals regularly to make sure nothing happened to change the circumstances regarding your goal. Update and edit your goal when needed.
Goals are a useful way to make sure everything that needs to get done gets done and improves time management. Make a habit of writing down what you need to do.

What is stress management?
This one is also self-explanatory. There are two kinds of stress, eustress and distress. Eustress is healthy for you, it stands for the kind of stress that makes you happy or makes you laugh. Distress is unhealthy, it stands for the kind of stress that makes you feel sad, angry, or depressed. This tab is concerned with reducing distress related to leadership.
How does distress relate to leadership?
Stress affects your attitude. A lot of eustress makes you happy, feeding a good attitude. A lot of distress leads to a tough time when trying to keep going through daily life. Being overly distressed is bad for anyone, not just leaders.
Where does distress come from?
Distress is a result of negative events happening in your life. Not all of them may be your fault, nor will all of them be controllable, but they may happen and cause you distress.
How do I reduce distress?
For those things that cause distress that you can control, the best thing to do is to confront the source of the distress. Say, your committee is constantly failing to succeed in achieving your goals. This causes distress. To beat it, look into why none of the goals were completed. Were they unrealistic? Did they expect too much from too little? Did everyone follow through? Did anyone not pull their weight? Etc. Always look into the source of the problem and see what you can do to solve it, when applicable.

What is it?
Networking is the process of forming a network, a skill few people ever put to use. By forming a network, you as a leader and a person can keep in touch with those people who have resources available to you.
How does networking pertain to leadership?
Simply put, the most efficient way to get things done is to know the people who know how to get those things done. By forming and expanding on a network, you can effectively do almost anything. For more on forming networks, visit the Networking page.

So what's been presented?
This page as a whole has shown you that leadership is a skill that relies on learning common real world skills and traits.
So what makes a leader?
A leader is made of all of these traits and skills. A leader is someone willing to lead others to accomplish a common goal. Every leader is different, and each kind uses his/her own natural ability to lead others effectively.
What kind of leader am I?
To answer this, I have a few quizzes that can help you determine your own leadership strengths and weaknesses so that you know what to work on and what you are already great at.
The quizzes are coming soon, I'm learning how to make web-quizzes and when I do, they will be posted here!
How do I improve my leadership?
Practice. The more you lead, the better you get at leading. There is no substitute for hard work and experience.
What if I don't understand something about leadership?
